Description

This detailed course is offered to the massage professional seeking clear and concise instructions and treatment methods for managing mild lymphedema through the application of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Lymphatic Massage). Enrollment is open to certified Massage Practitioners, Wellness Providers and Bodyworkers. This 3-day, 8-hour course, includes both theoretical review (study) and practical exercises (hands-on instruction).

Lymph is the fluid that flows through the lymphatic system, a network composed of lymph vessels and intervening lymph nodes whose function is to return fluid from the tissues to the central circulation. A build-up of lymph in the fatty tissues under your skin is called Lymphedema. Early and careful management is needed to prevent and reduce symptoms.

Some medical and cosmetic procedures can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues and lymphatic vessels, preventing normal lymphatic flow causing swelling (lymphedema). Prolonged lymphedema can cause inflammation, pain and fibrosis which results in the formation of excess dense, fibrous connective tissue.

When performed correctly, Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps prevent and manage post-op lymphedema or fibrosis (scar tissue) from Lipo, Liposuction or surgery. It accelerates recovery and healing, stimulating lymphatic vessels and nodes through gentle hand techniques applied to the soft tissues of the body to encourage movement of lymph. These gentle manual techniques stretch and massage the skin which encourages the movement of lymph by drawing fluid into the lymphatic vessels and towards the lymph nodes. MLD is most affective when combined with exercise, dietary restrictions, skin care and compression garments .
